FIDAN KASIMOVA

Country: Azerbaijan

Profession: Soprano

Bearer of the honorary Title of The People's Artist of USSR; Bearer of the honorary title of The State Artist of the Azerbaijan Republic; Bearer of the highest Honour Medal of Azerbaijan Republic Highest Merit Honour Medal; One of the greatest sopranos of ex-USSR; Soprano Kasimova was born and raised in Azerbaijan's capital city Baku, in 1957. She has received her first training at the school of Byul-Byul where outstanding young talents were being trained under close state supervision.

In 1966 she entered the state conservatory of Baku and graduated with the highest honour degrees in 1971 from the violin department and from the vocal training department in 1972. The same year (1972) she was accepted to the Moscow Conservatory (P.I.Tchaikovsky Conservatory) as doctoral student in the vocal training department.

In 1973 she won the silver medal in the International Voice competition in Geneva. In 1974 she was declared by the Azerbaijan State as the Head Soloist of the State Opera. In 1975 she won the special award in the International Voice competition in Holland. In 1977 she won the gold medal in the International Viotti competition in Italy.

In 1986 she was awarded with the Honorary Title of PEOPLE'S ARTIST OF THE USSR (This is a very rare title whereby only extremely outstanding talents such as Nuruyev and Barishnikov were awarded in their own arts...This title is given only to three Sopranos in the history of the USSR in the art of Opera and Mrs.Kasimova is the youngest one who received this honorary title. This title was given with the highest approval of the President of the State-Secretary general- And after Mrs.Kasimova no one else received this honorary title in the art of opera) The same year she received the professorship from the Moscow Conservatory and became the youngest professor of vocal training discipline in the history of USSR. Her name was mentioned as one of the two Soviet citizens in a book called "The Greatest 100 Women of the World". (The other person listed in this book was the first woman cosmonaut).

She has created unforgettable characters at the very prominent stages of the world starting with the world-wide famous Bolshoi of Moscow. Some of the important roles she played were; Desdemona (Othello, Verdi), Tosca (Tosca, Puccini), Michaela (Carmen, Bizet), Chio-Chio-San (Madam Butterfly, Puccini), Tatiana (Eugeny Onegin, Chaikovski ), Nigar (Koroglu, Uzeyir Hacibeyov), Gulehre (Arssn Mal Alan, Uzeyir Hacibeyov), Mimi (La Boheme, Puccini), Aida (Aida, Verdi), Turandot (Turandot, Puccini) .........etc.

Prof. Dr. Kasimova has several LPs and one CD published by the Soviet Melodia company. Mrs.Kasimova has given several concerts in many countries starting with the ALL republics of the ex-Soviet Union; USA, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Mexico, France, all Baltic States, Denmark, Cuba, Turkey......etc. Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Virtuosos of Moscow are among the most important orchestras that she toured with. Fedoseyev and Gergiev are some of the important conducters she worked with.

Prof. Dr. Kasimova is still continuing her international concert career and she is also giving special master classes in the most prestigious conservatories around the world. The last master class she gave was at the Boston Conservatory in Boston MA,USA in August 1996. Mrs. Kasimova is also an outstanding expert in healing the nodules on the vocal cords without using any medication; thanks to very unique exercising techniques she developed. Her concert with her sister Soprano Huraman Kasimova and with Detroit Symphony in September 1997 has been recorded and released as a compact disc.
