AYSE CEBESOY SARIALP

Ayse Cebesoy Sarialp born in Istanbul comes from a very old (both maternally and paternally) Turkish
family whose members served Turkey on top and high prominent positions.
Ayse Sarialp is a graduate of Istanbul University, majoring in Linguistics. She worked for the United
States Information Service for 18 years, was rewarded a badge and a certificate of recognition for her
services in 1960 by the General Director of the United States Information Agency in Washington, D.C., Mr.
Allen. She was then visiting the United States on an orientation program under the auspices of the
Department of State.
Mrs. Sarialp for almost ten years, handled the Student Counseling Program inUSIS Istanbul where she
helped Turkish doctors and students who wished to attend American universities and who wished to enter
American hospitals for intern or resident program. As a Cultural Aid, Sarialp also organized numerous
programs for the American visitors who came to Turkey under State Department’s Educational and Cultural
Exchange programs, to meet their Turkish counterparts, or to address Turkish cultural and educational
communities. As Istanbul Fulbright Secretary, Mrs. Sarialp was responsible for all the Turkish and
American Fulbright grantees who came to teach or to make research in Istanbul or to study in the United
States.
Since 1965, Mrs. Sarialp was appointed as the director of the Turkish-American University Association
where at present she is serving as the General Director the Association’s Cultural and Educational
Programs. Under her supervision hundreds of cultural programs, lectures, excursions, concerts, symposia,
panels and similar events were successfully organized. The aim of those events was to develop the
educational and cultural links between the peoples of Turkey and the United States.
Mrs. Sarialp translated a number of American plays into Turkish, which were performed successfully by the
Turkish State Theatres and by private theatres. Among these translations were: The Teahouse of the
August Moon, Bell Book and Candle, Sabrina Fair, Stalag 17 and Rashamon among others.
She has written articles for the Turkish dailies on American educational system. She has given and
still gives lectures to American visiting educational groups on Turkish history, culture, traditions and
customs. She is also doing similar programs for the Turkish groups on American life.
Mrs. Sarialp, at present, is also serving as the General Director of the Universities Cultural and
Educational Foundation, which was founded in 1971. TAUA is a founding member of this organization.
