Bengu Bukey (Yaban) started her music education at the State Conservatory, Opera and Concerts Singing
Division in Turkey in 1983. She graduated in 1989 with honours and was awarded with a one-year
scholarship to further her education and career with conductor Jean-Yves Gauden in Nice, France.
She started her professional singing career at Izmir State Opera and Bale in 1990. She was referred as
the “singer with a beautiful technique and colour” by opera critics and quickly became the lead singer a
year later. For the ensuing seven years, she was one of the top three coloratura sopranos in Turkey and
has performed in numerous operas, recitals and concerts in Turkey, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Romania,
and Russia.
She performed at two solo concerts in Ottawa and Toronto in October 1998 to commemorate the 75th
Anniversary of Republic of Turkey. She was the principal singer in two benefit concerts for Turkish
Earthquake Benefit Funds in Fall 1999. Her latest participation in concert series "Golden Moments in
Opera" arias from Mozart's famous operas, Magic Flute and Abduction from Seraglio.
