SAZIYE CAKIROGLU
Country: United States of America
Profession: Interpreter/Translator
Autobiography:
I was born in a beautiful seaside village on the Aegean coast. I went to a private boarding school for
girls in Izmir to pursue my high school education. I was very interested in foreign languages and wanted
to pursue my education on a field that had something to do with languages.
First, I went to Istanbul Ataturk Egitim Enstitusu and became a teacher of English. My teachers at the
Egitim Enstitusu insisted that I pursue my interest and skill in foreign languages and transfer to
Bogazici (Bosphorus) University. But I was tired of being away from my hometown all the time as well as
always studying and not having any fun. Of course, then I had no idea what fun Bosphorus University was.
I went to Guzelbahce High school to teach English to junior high school Turkish students. Guzelbahce,
a fisherman's village, is within 10 miles of Izmir. I loved that place and I loved teaching. When I was
appointed to another school after a little teaching experience, I decided that it was time to continue my
education from where I left it off.
I applied to Bosphorus University for a transfer and I was accepted due to my high grades and my teachers'
references. I fell in love with that University. I have never seen a University even similar to Bogazici
(Bosphorus) University in so many years of my education. As you will read below, I went to other
Universities in North America that are in beautiful cities by the ocean, but they couldn't even come
close to Bosphorus University. With the fun, location, activities and the education Bosphorus University
provides, I strongly believe that it is unique and precious. You go to school as if you are on vacation.
After I completed my degree at Bosphorus University in English Literature and Linguistics, I went to
Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada to pursue Masters Degree in Linguistics. Burnaby is just
north of Seattle and pretty close to US border. Vancouver is also a beautiful city with multicultural and
welcoming people. I won't forget the student aids that I received as a foreign student at that University.
After I had my M.A. in Linguistics from Simon Fraser University, I decided to go into Speech Sciences,
so I came to University of California at Santa Barbara. I became a speech therapist after I attended
UCSB Faculty of Speech and Hearing Sciences.
I carried out my profession in several hospitals and nursing homes. I decided to start up my own business
which I could manage from home, so came about my translation business. As I had a vast educational
background, that has not been so difficult for me. After all, I had courses in Computer Science even
prolog language, in Medicine during my education in Speech and Hearing Sciences, and naturally in grammar
and syntax. Now I have my own business and my own web site (come visit at
www.turkishtranslations.com).
