As the only female faculty at USC’s Civil Engineering Department and as the only woman Ph.D. student at Rutgers University in Geotechnical Engineering Program, she became a role model for young women in a male dominated field like Civil Engineering. She taught graduate level courses like “Design of Transportation Facilities” and “Geometric Design of Roadways” at USC to graduate students in Transportation Planning and Civil Engineering. She inspired both men and women to achieve graduate degrees in transportation related fields.

Dr. Erten has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, from Bogazici University in Istanbul-Turkey. She received her masters and Ph.D. degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Dr. Erten served as the Adopt-A-School Chairwoman for Women’s Transportation Seminar’s-Los Angeles Board and is also active member of several organizations like American Society of Civil Engineers, Transportation Research Board, United States Committee on Large Dams and KA-DER (Organization to Educate and Support Woman Nominees for Legislator Positions in Turkey).
