Title: Ataturk; Transforming the Image of a Nation

Author: Bernard Lewis; Photographs by Etem Tem

Publisher: Ertug & Kocabiyik Publications

Review: "Atatürk was the unprecedented author, designer, and architect of an enormous transformation that profoundly changed the moral, cultural, historical and physical values of Turkish society. As a pragmatic visionary whose aim was reset that society on the path of progress and development, he succeeded in giving life to brand-new political and social structures that were anchored in the bedrock of grassroots democracy. By encouraging and fostering the active participation of the Turkish people, he sought to replace the unheeded dictates of an enfeebled Ottoman state with strong individual initiative as the driving force of society. Taking in the grand purview of the principles on which the Republic of Turkey was founded and the boldness of his undertaking, one is astonished by Atatürk's genius and insight.

As historians of international repute, Professor Bernad Lewis and Professor Halil Inalcık are the authors of the texts. The photographs reproduced in the book are a visual record of a critical period of Atatürk's life that was taken by Etem Tem who was given close, personal access. Technically superb, they are composed with an eye for journalistic realism in which Atatürk is presented as a model for how modern-day Turk should act and dress in the modern-day world. These are the images that Atatürk wanted not only he Turkish nation but also the whole world to perceive as indicative of the new Turkish republic that he was bringing into being. The importance that Atatürk attached to Tem's work is clearly revealed by technical excellence of the photography: this is the first recorded instance of such high-quality photography being used in Turkey."
